My classmates and I are having a reunion-type get together, being held at a casino in Slatten Ranch. It's the end of the whole thing, and Dana and I are at the front desk, checking out of our room. We have to look over the list of everything we bought while staying there. It's not a paper list, but this motorized list under the glass desktop. There are two buttons that control the speed of how fast the list moves. The button on the right is crossed out with red marker, but I don't notice that until I press it and hear the weird grinding sound the machinery makes. The two cashiers, women, behind the desk ask for Dana's and for my wallets. The cashier directly across from Dana seems very eager about it, and Dana wants to know why. The cashier says there's a problem with our ID's, but Dana refuses to give her the entire wallet. the cashier tells her that she (Dana) is going to be in trouble because she owns a purse (the brand name is Bananas) from Australia that hasn't been released in the U.S. yet. Dana says it's okay, because she bought it in Australia, and didn't have it imported or anything. The cashier says she will call the police if we don't give them our ID's, so we tell her to go ahead, and run away from the desk and towards the back exit of the casino with our hands up in the air. An announcement of our imminent arrest is played over the loudspeaker, and a bunch of our classmates start laughing and pointing at us as we walk by. I scream sarcastically, "I'm so wasted!" We get outside, and see the police cars coming down the street. Dana remarks that they got there really fast. When they get to the parking lot where we are, we don't resist but put our hands behind our backs to be cuffed. The cop who handcuffs me (I'm still holding onto my purse) looks very young, and all the cops are wearing fuzzy hats similar to the ones worn by the British royal guards, but the hats are much shorter.

I'm sleeping, and I wake up because I hear someone outside talking to me. It's still dark outside. It's Dana, and she's saying, "Yvonne... you'll never guess why I'm here." I almost nod off again, but I get up and let her in. It's just after 6 AM. We were supposed to hang out later in the day, but she had a fight with someone (?) and came over early. I ask her if she wants coffee, and say that I think I can figure out the coffeemaker. She says that would be good, but when I go make it, my dad tells me we can't use it and should go out, so give her a towel and things so she can shower. I'm back in high school, and in class, watching a movie. There's a cute guy in the desk next to mine. He's sad about something, so we hold hands. Everyone has to leave the room, and he and I get separated. By the time we're outside, he's disappeared completely. One of his friends and I are the first ones outside, and we're standing near a large tree. The tree smells strongly of pine, but has a shape similar to a willow tree, has long, pale green needles and is covered in bright red berries. The guy's friend is holding a large camera. He tells me that his friend's family is coming, and I'll have to tell them what happened. I start panicking, because I have no idea why he disappeared. I'm driving home along S_____ but a huge cement mixer truck is blocking the neighborhood entrance. I pull up behind a car that's parked behind the cement mixer. They have a bunch of picnic stuff set up around the car. I'm preparing to walk home, but the cement mixer leaves, so I get back in the car. I have to wait for the driver of the car in front of me to move a picnic table that is propped upright between our cars. I go to a little country store run by the same woman, and she gives me a free cookie, a recipe book, and a can of creamed corn. The can's label says "Daisy Pie" and has a picture of a cartoon chicken.

I'm upstairs talking to my dad. I look out a window, and I can see into the large, empty field near our neighborhood. The field is full of dry wheat, and from opposite sides of the field, two old, black cars start racing towards each other. One of them is a hearse. I say "Oh no!" and rush downstairs. I'm wearing all black, and I put a lei (purple with pink accent flowers) around my neck. I'm carrying another lei that is blue with yellow flowers. My mom and brother ask what I'm doing, and I say I need to go to the haunted house at the edge of the field. They don'tn believe me, so I say they can come along. Once at the house, we stay on the porch for several minutes while I talk to the caretaker, a man, who gives me the house keys. From the outside of the house it looks as if it were abandoned a long time ago, but all of the fairly new stuff from the family who lived there is still inside. I realize that we forgot to wear crosses, so I draw one on my left hand with a black pen. The ink is slow to come out at first. After I draw one on my mom and brother, I say, "In the name of the father, the son, and the holy spirit, amen." It's very dark in the house, almost too black to see anything. We make our way upstairs, and I go to the last door in the hallway. I'm about to open the door, and I'm telling my mom the room belonged to a baby who was killed. My mom freaks out, not wanting anything to do with it, so I tell her we'll leave. We start going downstairs, but the front door opens. It's the father of the baby, who I know was the one who killed it. I get so scared that I pass out, and when I wake up, I'm in the hospital. In the bed next to me is the father, whose wife and teenage son are visiting him. The son is doing card tricks, and then acts as the dealer while my brother and I play 21. I know the kid is cheating, though, because it's a marked deck. The pictures on the cards are all really intricate, old-fashioned pictures of people on bicycles or playing games.
